He did not make his season debut until Mar. 24, but after a four inning performance with only three hits and one earned run allowed, Joey proved he was worthy of a starting role. Though he only played in nine games last season, Centanni finished fourth on the year with 41.2 innings pitched, and his 4.97 ERA was the second-lowest on the team. On April 20 against Cal State Fullerton, Joey nearly tossed a complete game, going eight innings deep with two earned runs and four strikeouts in the 2-1 loss. He followed that appearance up with another solid outing, pitching six innings at Long Beach State on April 27, despite the Tigers dropping a 7-6 decision.2007 (Sophomore):
One of the Tigers' most promising pitchers entering the 2007 season, Joey was limited by an injured labrum in his left shoulder. Centanni appeared in just six games on the mound, posting an 0-5 record and a team-leading 4.32 ERA. Although the injury prevented Centanni from pitching, Joey found other ways to contribute to the Tigers as he made his offensive debut during his sophomore campaign. Joey appeared in 26 games at the plate, posting a .303 batting average with 23 hits, 11 runs scored and 10 RBI. Centanni finished tied for the team lead with five stolen bases. Centanni played his first handful of games in the outfield, but the injured labrum forced Joey to serve only as a DH. Centanni was finally shutdown entirely on Apr. 1.2006 (Freshman):
The Tigers' 2006 freshman of the year, Centanni appeared in 18 games, including 12 starts for the Tigers. With a combined 6-4 record, Centanni closed the season by nabbing All-Big West Honorable Mention as he led the Tigers with six wins and three complete games. Centanni was second on the team with a 2.77 ERA and with 87.2 innings pitched. Joey's best performance of the season came on Apr. 14, as he allowed just one run on four hits in a 2-1, complete game victory over UC Santa Barbara. Centanni's performance earned him Co-Big West Pitcher of the Week honors. In his final two starts of the season, Centanni collected back-to-back wins over Washington and Cal State Northridge, allowing a combined two runs on eight hits in 16 innings.High School:
Centanni graduated from University of San Diego High School in San Diego, Calif. in 2005, where he earned a combined five letters in baseball (three) and basketball (two). Joey finished with a 1.56 ERA in 31 innings. He allowed just seven walks while striking out 29. Following the season, Centanni was named his team's MVP. He also earned All-CIF and All-Western League honors. A dual threat for the Dons, Joey posted a .442 average with 47 hits and 12 stolen bases in 2004. Centanni's senior season was limited to just three games due to an injury to his thumb, but prior to the injury Centanni posted a .714 average with five hits in seven at-bats with one RBI.Personal:
Joseph Centanni is the son of Lou and Del Centanni.
